Jimmy leaned forward and sat his bottle of beer on the coffee table. He rubbed his hands together. “It’s gone too far. It used to be for all the right reasons, to rid the streets of the bad guys, that’s why everybody looked the other way. But everything’s changed, Reggie. It didn’t just start with Mike’s murder, it started a long time ago. It’s like we make up our minds and go full steam ahead, regardless of the truth.”

Reggie’s heart dropped. “What did y’all do, Jimmy?”

“When we arrested Charlie Red we were pretty sure we had the right guy. I mean, it all fit. Savannah did steal his drugs and he was looking for her. She stole them something like two or three months ago, however, but we were so ready to have a suspect in custody that we were more than willing to overlook that simple fact. But after you seemed so convinced that we had it all wrong I did a little investigating of my own. And not only was Charlie Red not at the crime scene at all, but he had an alibi. I didn’t believe him when he told me, I thought he was just trying to save his hide. But I investigated and it was true. He had an air tight alibi.”
